Apple MacBook Air: Buy Now or Wait for the Next Generation?

3

Renewed in 2020, the MacBook Air should benefit from a technical upgrade in the second half of 2022. Should we fall for the current model or wait a few months? That’s what we want to see together.

This is how the price table works

MacBook Air is one of the iconic devices that helped develop the laptop market. When Steve Jobs arrived on the scene in 2008 and picked up his latest creation from a kraft paper envelope, the entire IT industry was amazed. It will take several years for the competition to come into operation, especially with the name “Ultrabook”, supported by Intel, which establishes strict specifications.

Fourteen years later, it is not unreasonable to say that most laptops used today pick up some of the DNA from the first MacBook Air. But if Apple is known for its groundbreaking innovations, we know it can also settle for simple marginal adjustments.

For a potential buyer, this ambivalence means asking a specific question: should we turn to the current model or wait for the next generation that can shake the market? Here are some things that can help you make that decision.

MacBook Air M1: an ultraportable still in the game?

Long unchanged, the design of the MacBook Air has finally evolved in 2020. So do not expect an overall redesign for a while … especially since there is nothing to complain about in terms of its performance. It’s a cohesive machine that simply deserves to have more discreet edges around the screen. In that regard, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo explains that the MacBook Air 2022 will probably have a slightly larger panel (13.6 inches versus 13.3 inches), which means that Apple could nip a few millimeters here and there while keeping it same chassis.

On the screen side, the MacBook Air 2020 is classic with LED backlighting, while for example we find the Mini-LED on the new MacBook Pro. This technology provides better contrast and much higher brightness, and is a really strong point that we would like to see arrive on this new generation. Recent rumors from the blogosphere, however, suggest that this will not be the case.

Some specialists also evoke the arrival of an M2 chip on the next MacBook Air. The performance would be superior to the M1, but we should not expect a leap forward, especially in terms of the graphics part.

The proliferation of telecommuting and video conferencing in the wake of the pandemic makes it necessary to have better cameras on laptops. Apple has gone further with integrating a Full HD webcam on its new iMac and MacBook Pro, so it only seems logical that the MacBook Air would also get an improved camera.

MacBook Air (2022): Evolution or Revolution?

Based on current revelations, the new MacBook Air should be a simple development and will not usher in a new generation of devices. So what can you expect? We can already count on:

  • A 13.6-inch screen with thinner frames;
  • A (slightly) more powerful M2 processor;
  • A simple LED screen;
  • A better webcam.
