The Jaguar I-Pace was unveiled in the fall of 2016 at the Los Angeles Motor Show and was launched two years later. Before boarding, we expected a first-class presentation, but with no certainty about the vehicle’s road behavior.
The tested model
Except for a few adjustments, Jaguar I-Pace retains its 2018 lines today. With a footprint of 4.68 x 2.01 m, at a height of 1.57 m, it is part of the family’s electric SUVs. The example at our disposal benefits from the high HSE finish.
Allows to escape the white Fuji in the series, a blue Portifino, billed in option 1,048 euros, dresses his body. The house’s metallic color cards also offer black, red and gray for the same price. For better brightness inside, our test model is topped with a fixed panoramic roof that is offered for 1,418 euros.
As a replacement for 20-inch alloy wheels, our Jaguar I-Pace relies on 22-inch Style 5056 models in diamond finish with dark gray contrast (+ 2,772 euros). Please note that by making this selection, the electronically controlled air suspension is added automatically (+1,625 euros).
The four-wheel drive of the Jaguar I-Pace EV400 is powered by two engines, each developing 147 kW (200 hp), one installed between the front wheels and the other on the rear axle. The set offers a combined power of 294 kW (400 hp) for a maximum torque of 696 Nm. Enough to cover 0 to 100 km / h in 4.8 s before approaching the top speed set at 200 km / h.
This engine is powered by a lithium-ion battery with a gross energy capacity of 90 kWh, to 84.7 kWh usable. The WLTP range in the combined cycle is announced by Jaguar between 408 and 470 km. On its website, there are 448 km for an I-Pace EV400 in HSE finish. But with the possibilities, and in particular the relatively punishing 22-inch rims, the numbers go down to 420 km.
Note that this electric SUV can tow a trailer up to 750 kg.
Behind a large tailgate, a volume of 505 liters which rises to 1,163 l by laying down the 3 backrests. The floor released on the Jaguar I-Pace is then almost flat over its length, which goes from 0.967 to 1.797 m.
A double bottom can accommodate a few odds and ends, including charging cables. These can also take place in frustrated under the radiator cap.
Rear seat passenger comfort
Passengers sitting in the rear of the British brand’s electric SUV can enjoy a maximum legroom of 0.89 m. With the option of pushing their feet under the front seats. The knees will then be far away from the backrests. Thanks to the panoramic roof, the height under the roof here increases 7 cm.
The bench should appear quite soft and well-designed for the two people sitting at the ends. They get storage space, sockets (12 V cigarette lighter type, USB-C) and the option to individually adjust the ventilation of 4-zone air conditioning (+999 euros).
It would be better to limit the central space, which is quite narrow, to occasional troubleshooting. The rest of the time it will unfold a generous armrest pierced with 2 cup holders. The storm doors testify to a very nice overall presentation on I-Pace. ” I think it is the best in terms of finish in the category Admires Maxime Fontanier.
The driver’s point of view
” At the forefront of this test model, the presentation is simply sumptuous », our tests excite. The dashboard is decorated with different materials: upholstered parts, black lacquered plastic, parts in aluminum style, etc.
This presentation called ebony contrasts with Performance upholstery in light Windsor leather Light oysters. It all forms an accessible style against 1,430 euros. The electric seats are heated and ventilated, with memory position for the driver. Front passengers also have USB-C and 12 V connectors at their disposal, as well as plenty of storage space.
The steering wheel on the I-Pace is adjustable in height and depth. Behind him, the look of the digital screen can change. The most important information it provides is repeated as needed in the head-up display. To the right, the touchpad is very responsive. It is compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay via WiFi: no need to connect your smartphone. The HSE finish adds volume with the excellent Meridian Surround sound system.
The first laps
Before pressing the accelerator on the Jaguar I-Pace, start it by pressing the Start button and selecting the direction of travel using a button. Our test model benefits from the electronically controlled active air suspension, which allows the AdSR driving mode (Adaptive surface response).
The latter, selected by Maxime Fontanier during his test, adapts the parameters of the engine and the brakes to the environment of the vehicle. The two new options add 1,337 euros to the price of our electric SUV. ” I have the best possible chassis for this car »he comments.
The driving height can be changed as desired. This makes it possible to overcome certain obstacles, and if necessary to climb quite high sidewalks. At 12.75 m, from wall to wall, the turning circle does not facilitate maneuvers. On the other hand, the cleaner rear view camera offers a fine definition. Next to her when reversing, seen from above. Supported by good mirrors, it will be helpful to compensate for limited central vision.
On winding roads
It is on the touch screen that the regeneration force is adjusted according to two scenarios: slight reduction or ” A pedal »Which allows strong decelerations until the immobilization possibly. This operation is just ideal to source the Jaguar I-Pace on winding roads.
We will quickly realize that the electric SUV knows very well how to hide its more than 2,200 kg under a very dynamic character. Small roller in turns, a suspension that excels on degraded surfaces, a machine that accelerates and brakes hard, operated by large ventilated discs (350 mm front, 325 mm rear). ” It is very good at the level of the direction, we have a good feeling at the level of the brake pedal “Judging our tests.
That’s a great discovery! ” With the 22 inches and the Pirillis, I have grips! It’s a shit car Says the man with the cap. For example, the I-Pace shows less understeer than the Hyundai Ioniq 5, and fits well in the curves. ” I was expecting something much more clumsy ”Admits Maxime Fontanier.
Highways and consumption
Bringing Jaguar’s electric SUV to the highway will bring us other great surprises. Specifically, low wind and rolling noise, even over 130 km / h. Performance mode is accompanied by sound effects during acceleration, as if you were driving a thermal sports car.
In a smarter way, the active cruise control adjusts the pace of the I-Pace to the vehicle in front, even in traffic jams. The ergonomics of the steering wheel controls for driving aids are excellent. The other side of the coin is the machine energy-intensive, with a consumption that can easily exceed 30 kWh / 100 km on the highway. This will reduce the range to 250-260 km.
At best, with a very light foot, under favorable conditions and with 18-inch rims as standard on the S-finish, it becomes difficult to get below 18 kWh / 100 km. This would curl the autonomy of the combined cycle announced by the manufacturer. ” It’s more comfortable than a Tesla Model Y, but it’s much more fuel efficient »compares our tests.
During our tests, we are pretty much used to not reaching the maximum DC charging power. The Jaguar I-Pace showed us the opposite. Although on paper it can handle up to 104kW, we have seen the numbers go up over 114kW at an Ionity station. And this with a fairly gradual charging curve.
Getting the battery back to 80% power should not take longer than 35-40 minutes. Which seems reasonable for occasional travel. Note that the electric SUV from the prestigious brand since its development in 2020 has been equipped with an 11 kW AC charger.
Already very well equipped, especially in terms of driving assistance, Jaguar I-Pace EV400 in entry-level S finish starts at 81,200 euros. According to the manufacturer’s website, on May 4, 2022, it will be necessary to adjust at least 95,810 euros to afford the luxury of the HSE presentation. Then add another 12,000 euros before you reach the equipment level of the copy we tested.
” Jaguar’s brand image and especially the production quality can justify such a price level », Maxime Fontanier concludes.
