Biden puts key quantum technology group under the White House authority in hopes of faster charging of electric cars and more

President Biden will exercise the authority of the White House to accelerate quantum technology, which he hopes will allow Americans to charge their electric vehicles faster and spur other breakthroughs in edge computing.

Biden will on Wednesday sign an executive order to place the National Quantum Initiative Advisory Board, the federal government’s highest independent expert body on quantum information science and technology, directly under the authority of the White House.

This “ensures that the President, Congress, federal chambers and agencies, and the general public receive the most current, accurate, and relevant information on quantum information science and technology to advance U.S. policy-making and advance our technological advancement,” the White House said.

“While quantum information science is not new, recent QIS breakthroughs have shown the potential to drive innovation in the U.S. economy, from energy to medicine to advances in computing, networking and sensing,” he added.

Currently, most electrical options take about 10 hours to charge completely at home. Even the fastest superchargers at charging stations require up to 20 to 40 minutes to fully charge vehicles, resulting in additional customer costs and inconvenience and potentially delaying the use of electric vehicles in cars’ traditional gasoline.

The concept of a “quantum battery” was first proposed in a scientific article published in 2012. It has been theorized that quantum resources, such as entanglement, can be used to dramatically speed up the battery charging process while charging all battery cells.

The researchers also suggest that quantum technology may find key uses in future nuclear fusion power plants, which require large amounts of energy to be charged and discharged immediately. Sustainable fusion is a commercial energy source that is still under development, possibly at least a decade away, according to some estimates.

Nuclear fusion is the process of fusing two or more atoms into a single larger one, a process that releases potentially usable energy in the form of heat. The nuclear energy used today is created by another process called fission, which involves the splitting of atoms and the utilization of that energy. A major merger development was announced in Europe earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Biden will also sign a national security memorandum outlining the administration’s plan to address the risks posed by quantum computers to US cybersecurity.

Research shows that at some point in the not too distant future, when quantum computers reach a sufficient size and level of sophistication, they will be able to crack much of the cryptography that currently secures digital communications over the Internet.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology will release new quantum-resistant cryptographic standards that can protect against these future attacks.

“But the process of adapting America’s most vulnerable computer systems to these new standards will take time, resources and commitment,” the White House said.
