How do you choose your phone in 2021?
Before focusing on a new phone, it is important to consider a certain number of criteria. Because by targeting a model that can meet your needs, you can ultimately save precious euros on the price. It is really useless to pay full pot for features that you will never use or use very little.
Depending on usage
The first question you need to ask therefore concerns your daily use of the phone. How does it help you and how does it make your life easier? If you only use it for calls, text messages, emails and a few basic apps (weather, calendar, internet browser, etc.), there is no need to invest in a monster of power. On the other hand, if you are more focused on taking high quality photos and videos, it is better to look at phones with excellent sensors, and for that you need to invest in a adequately equipped device (counts at least 500 euros). For serious practice with video games (without being content with small playful apps that are not particularly greedy), your phone should have a minimum of muscular configuration with fast processors and enough RAM (we return to this). You also need a long-lasting battery so you can play your games in peace.
According to your budget
The question of the budget is, of course, central. This is of course the case for any device, but you need to keep in mind that a smartphone follows you daily and it is actually not recommended to jump on a poor quality model. Better to avoid ending up with a phone that wastes your time when it comes to making your life easier. However, it is also not a matter of destroying you. It is therefore necessary to determine the size of the envelope you have before taking the plunge. You have probably noticed it in the selection that opens this file, but you can already now find excellent smartphones from 240 euros. If your means allow you to climb higher, do not hesitate to pamper yourself while still remembering the reasons that make you change model. Which brings us back to the famous criteria mentioned above. A quick word on 5G compatibility: If the network is installed more and more in France, 4G is still the majority. However, it may be a good idea to equip yourself for the future, especially since 5G-enabled phones can be found very affordable these days.
Depending on the screen
The size and character of the screen does not surprisingly play a central role. To highlight increasingly sophisticated tiles and above all the content displayed there, manufacturers compete in ingenuity. For the size of the screen, and the device in general, it is better to rely on a model that does not clutter you too much and that can easily slip into one of your pockets or a bag. As always, you need to consider your habits before making a decision. For the purely technical part, know that two technologies occupy the market: LCD and OLED. LCD panels are generally found on low-end models, while OLED screens have invaded mid- and high-end. OLED panels (as well as its even more efficient AMOLED version) show deep black colors as well as more striking contrasts, but a very good LCD screen is already something to impress.
Depending on the battery
Another key element to keep in mind: battery life. Nomadic basically, a cell phone should last as long as possible after a recharge. There is no miracle recipe, but by keeping the fewest applications open and without using the most energy-intensive too much (like certain video games), the device can save precious minutes / hours of liveliness. At the time of purchase, there are at least two criteria that can make the difference. On the one hand, a USB-C port dedicated to fast charging. Being able to restore some energy to the battery in a minimum of time can save you the day in an emergency. On the other hand, a battery that shows at least 3500 mAh has all the potential to be more durable than average. Other than that, we must not neglect either the consumption of the screen and the various available applications. Unfortunately, even by carefully examining the technical data sheets or by referring to a specialized vendor, some gray areas can remain. That said, with a battery of 3500 mAh or more, you are already setting the odds on your side.
Depending on the operating system: Android or iOS?
Let’s address the question, oh so burning, about the operating system. Two players share the market: iOS from Apple and Android from Google. Basically, the first iPhone and the second, for the most part, run most other smartphones marketed. The operating system is at the heart of the experience your phone provides: interface, features, performance and application store (App Store on iPhones and Google Play Store on Android phones). The ergonomics of the two systems prove to be of high quality. There was a time when the iOS interface had a real head start in terms of practicality and emotional phone in hand. But the gap has narrowed significantly in recent years, and a good smartphone running Android is now as comfortable to handle as an iPhone. Two factors can play the justice of peace: the price and your physical environment. An iPhone requires a generally stronger money investment when buying. Of course, you can find advanced Android phones within a similar price range. But Apple phones are still more expensive than average products. Manufacturers of models based on Android practice much more affordable prices. And then there is the nature of the material you use on a daily basis. If you’re surrounded by Macs and iPads at home, it’s very likely that the Apple environment will give you full satisfaction. In fact, it seems quite logical to stay in this ecosystem. Conversely, if no Apple machine punctures your days, the choice between an iOS or Android phone immediately seems more open. The experience you get from your old smartphone can also affect your decision.
Depending on storage and RAM
If you like taking a lot of pictures and videos, it is better to have enough gigabytes available. The same if you like big video games or rather greedy applications. Allow at least 64 GB of storage space so as not to be too bothered. And if the phone has a microSD card slot, it’s even better because you get even more space. So aim for models with at least 3 GB of RAM (which is the case for the phones in our range), so that all your applications run without too many problems. It is the RAM that will control the various actions requested from your smartphone and under 3 GB it will be very complicated. That said, the heavier operations you require from your smartphone, the more powerful a processor you will need. And there is no miracle: the most expensive models are generally equipped with the most powerful processors.
The most reputable phone brands
According to a recent survey conducted by Statista, the favorite phone brands in France are the South Korean Samsung, the American Apple and the Chinese Xiaomi. Less well known, but still more appreciated, Huawei is a challenger to reckon with. Therefore, if the 2021 numbers have not yet fallen, 2020 has been dominated by Samsung with 36% of the vote, especially thanks to their Galaxy models (which bring a varied offer in terms of price and obvious qualities). The same survey tells us that iPhones appeal to 24% of users, compared to 16% for Xiaomi and 7% for Huawei. Another lesson to remember: Chinese brands are making great strides. Since 2018, Xiaomi has risen 7% and Huawei has seen a 6% increase. Another study conducted by the Fnac Darty group is also very informative because it focuses on the durability and reliability of phones. In other words: their service life before they break down or experience major technical problems (the availability of spare parts is also taken into account when necessary). And this time, it’s Huawei seeking first place on the podium ahead of Apple, Honor, Samsung and Wiko. This is valuable data to keep in mind.
What are the best phones for taking pictures?
Regularly taking pictures with your phone has become a habit for many people. Never before had so many photos been taken and shared since the advent of smartphones. The quality of the images and the dedicated opportunities to enhance them have become a selling point for the producers. In addition to image processing supported by software integrated in the device, the presence of multiple photosensors (wide angle module, telephoto, etc.) is also used to adapt to all situations. Another argument is often made: the number of megapixels (Mpx). If one can imagine that the higher the number of pixels, the more beautiful the image becomes, it is actually not that simple because it is also necessary to take into account the software processing of the footage. Same observation for photos taken at night or in a very dark room: It is the software layer from the manufacturer that can make all the difference. Among the models that excel at taking beautiful photos, we can for example recommend iPhone 12 Pro Max, Samsung Galaxy S1 Ultra or OPPO Find X3 Pro. More affordable, the Samsung Galaxy S20 + also holds its own right, as do the OnePlus 9, Huawei P40 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 11. Google should not be surpassed with its Pixel 5 and its Pixel 4A at a very attractive price. Finally, think about the storage capacity of your phone so that it does not get saturated too quickly with the contents of your photo gallery. Again, the presence of a MicroSD card reader gives you a clear advantage!
