Reggie Fils-Aimé discusses Metaverse and blockchain technology

Former Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aimé discussed Metaverse, blockchain technology, and P2E in video games during a panel discussion held at the SXSW conference.

The interview focused on Reggie’s journey as a Haitian immigrant from the Bronx, who later attended Cornell University and got a place at Nintendo after forming a close friendship with Satoru Iwata.

After discussing the challenges he faced along the way, what he achieved while at Nintendo of America, and why he quit in 2019 (to teach and join a board), the interview directed him to another discussion. topic: where was the video game industry headed?

Reggie Fils-Aimé then described Metaverse as both an industry-wide concept, but which also shares its own interpretation of what it meant for the industry:

“What is Metaverset? I think Metaverse is a bit like ‘the cloud’ five years ago, and even ‘the Internet’ 20 years ago. It’s a brand that all companies are trying to grab so they can say, that their business is part of Metaverset. For me, Metaverse is a virtual space where you can interact with your friends in a social and, I think, gaming-like environment. So it’s social, it’s digital … and there is the opportunity to truly interact with your friends as well as people who have the potential to become your friends. ”

Reggie mentioned Fortnite and Roblox as specific examples of implementations of his vision of Metaverse, which he further enriches as “a wide range of different experiences, each bound together by a single motto”.

However, he mentioned that he was skeptical about the success of Facebook’s rebranding in Metaverse, as he did not believe that Facebook was an innovative company and had not had much success with its physical products. He also expressed his preference for augmented reality (AR) technology over virtual reality (VR), citing Pokemon GO as an example of a successful integration of this technology.

Blockchain technology is being considered in video games

In terms of blockchain technology, cryptocurrency, and P2E (play-to-earn), Reggie wanted to put it this way:

“I trust blockchain. I think blockchain is a really compelling technology … I’m also a fan of the ‘play to own’ concept in video games, and I’m talking like a gamer who would have invested 50 hours in a game, 100 hours in a game … He there are even some games that I have put 300 hours in … And when I’m ready to move on, it would not be great to make money on what I have built ? I bet I would have a few people if I decided to sell my island today Crossing animals… I wish I could make money on it. Integrating blockchain technology into code and development could allow me to do that. »

However, he qualified his positive remarks about the potential of blockchain technology in gaming by saying that it should make sense for gamers, not just for game developers, to make more money.

And you? Do you agree with Reggie’s optimistic view of Metaverse and blockchain technology in gaming? And would you be willing to attend the island auction Crossing animals by Reggie?
