Electric car: the three most expensive vehicles on the market

Today, Tesla Magazine invites you to discover the three jewels of the moment. From Porsche Taycan to Tesla Model S Plaid, then to Lucid Air, let’s go for this TOP 3 whose keywords are “put your hand in your pocket”!

Porsche Taycan

From the Mission E concept unveiled in 2015, the Porsche Taycan has been on the market since the end of 2019.

  • Available in four versions 2S, 4S, Turbo and Turbo S, it combines up to 761 hp and 463 km of autonomy.
  • The Taycan 2S access model is available from 86,254 euros in France or 20,000 euros less than the old entry-level, Taycan 4S, shown at 108,632 euros, excluding options.
  • Turbo is more expensive, from € 155,552, Turbo S is the top of the range with its € 189,152.
  • Deliveries started in 2020, except for 2S, which later joined the range.

Exterior and interior design

The design of the Porsche Taycan is inspired by the Mission E concept itself, which offers similarities to the 918 Spyder, where the rear end evokes the 911.

Taycan has a body composed of a mixture of aluminum, steel and plastic reinforced with carbon fiber (CFRP), and is mounted on carbon fiber rims: 21 “front and 22” rear. The aluminum brakes in these wheels are impressive, up to a diameter of 420 mm on the Turbo S, combined with 10-piston calipers.

Can accommodate up to four passengers, the cabin is marked on the many screens, five in number exactly. With touch operation, voice control is of course possible.

Motorization and performance

Similar to those used on the 919 hybrid, two electric motors power the electric sedan. Specifically, the rear unit has a 2-speed transmission, towards the front. The base system develops 625 horsepower (460 kW).

However, an Overboost function distinguishes the Turbo and Turbo S models. The first reaches 500 kW (680 hp), the second 560 kW (761 hp), and the torque is 850 and 1,050 Nm respectively.

These features allow the Taycan Turbo S to go from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.8 seconds and pass the crossbar at 200 km / h and 9.8 seconds. The turbo is very slightly more modest, with 3.2 seconds and 10.6 seconds.

Battery and autonomy

The lithium-ion battery is located in the floor of the vehicle and runs at full length between the front and rear axles to ensure an even weight distribution.

Announced at 93.4 kWh (408 LG cells), the package provides the capacity that Taycan has from 381 to 463 kilometers of autonomy in the WLTP cycle. The smaller 79.2 kWh package allows up to 407 km on the Taycan 2S and 4S.

In short: Porsche Taycan

  • Price: from € 86,254
  • Autonomy: 381 to 463 km autonomy (WLTP)
  • Luggage volume: 530L

Tesla Model S poster

On the occasion of its conference called “Battery Day”, Tesla announced the launch of the most powerful of all Model S: Plaid versions. Equipped with three electric motors, it accelerates like a sports car and offers a spectacular range. As its price … Almost 630 km of autonomy in fact for 130,000 €.

A high price in absolute numbers, but which remains very competitive in terms of the level of performance of this exceptional car.

Exterior and interior design

Coming from the computer world, this car’s highly innovative architecture is similar to that of a rolling smartphone with a battery integrated in the floor and a large, continuously updated touch screen. This architecture provides it too excellent family services with three spacious rear seats and two huge trunks.

The latest generation of the Tesla Model S stands out above all by its completely redesigned interior. The completely redesigned dashboard now consists of a large touch screen in horizontal position with a newly designed digital counter and a steering wheel without an upper spoke of the aircraft type called Yoke.

Motorization and performance

Imagine: a Model S equipped with three electric motors that deliver as much as 1,100 horsepower distributed on all four wheels. Enough for the machine to go from 0 to 100 km / h in less than 2.1 s, the 400 m standing start is swallowed in less than 9 s, and the top speed is announced at 320 km / h. The Tesla Model S Plaid is therefore the brand’s flagship model.

Also, fans note the presence of extended rear fenders on the Plaid version, which brings a fine touch of bestiality. Under this discreet coat hides a major modification of the chassis, which includes two new axles in reinforced aluminum with new engines.

Battery and autonomy

On the autonomy side, Tesla announces that it may exceed 840 km.

With a capacity of 95 kWh, the lithium-ion battery pack still consists of Panasonic cells of the nickel-aluminum-cobalt type, but their integration has been optimized and the voltage increased (350 to 450 V) to supply more power and receive more when charging.

In a nutshell: Tesla Model S Plaid

  • Price: from € 130,000
  • Autonomy: from 630 to 840 km
  • Luggage volume: 793 L

LucidAir

In Europe, the highly acclaimed club of high-end electric sedans will soon have a new member. Almost a year after launching in the US, the Lucid brand wants to sell its Air luxury sedan in Germany as a first step.

  • With its 400 kilometers of autonomy and its 400 horsepower, the entry-level model (Air) should be offered around $ 60,000 excluding taxes and state aid.
  • As for the advanced version, its production would be limited to 255 copies. Much more sporty, it would offer 1000 horsepower and would be sold between $ 100 / 150,000 (Air dream Edition), always free of taxes and state aid.
  • However, its shipping price would remain lower than its two competitors, the Porsche Taycan and the Tesla Mode S Plaid.

[EDIT] According to our latest information, the price of Lucid Air starts at $ 169,000 (€ 158,000) for the Dream edition, produced in a limited batch of 520 copies. Next comes the Grand Touring for $ 139,000 (€ 130,000). Later, Lucid promises that cheaper versions will be added to the range, eventually coming to a base price of $ 77,400 (€ 72,000) for the Pure version.

Exterior and interior design

Lucid’s Space Concept architecture not only includes miniaturization of an electric driveline and battery pack, but it also expands the passenger cabin forwards and backwards! gives Air a unique look. A liquid form uninterrupted by any detail, which is therefore not necessary, Lucid Air is the most aerodynamic luxury car in the world.

In front of the driver is a massive 34-inch curved glass 5K screen that appears to hover over the dashboard. In my time with the Porsche Taycan, I really enjoyed its beautiful 16.8-inch curved driver screen. Air’s screen is more than twice as long as Taycan’s and divided into three separate content sections.

The solid glass roof covers the entire cabin with almost no interruptions. Both front and rear passengers will appreciate the incredible views; the dividing line between inside and outside is blurred.

Motorization and performance

Two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, Lucid will let customers choose the configuration of its electric sedan.

In the “entry level” it is a 400 horsepower engine that will be offered. As for the top of the range, its performance should flirt with the best supercars. Powered by two electric motors – one per axle – Lucid Air promises 1000 horsepower dazzling acceleration with a shot from 0 to 96 km / h in 2.5 seconds.

Battery and autonomy

Powered by a 113 kWh battery, The top-of-the-range version will offer about 800 kilometers of autonomy. It will be supplemented with other configurations. At the entry level, Lucid Air was to offer 400 kilometers of autonomy, suggesting a package of 70 to 90 kWh. Once on the market, Lucid Air will be the fastest electric car in terms of recharging.

Note: Lucid Air is a vehicle that comes in 4 versions. Air, Touring, Grand Touring and Dream Edition, with the latter being the most exclusive.

  • This version offers a 1080 hp engine block, a range of 593 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle, acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.5 s and a maximum speed of 270 km / h.
  • It has a compatible ultra-fast charge of 350 kW (60% energy in 20 minutes of charging, up to 32 kilometers in one minute).
  • Production of Lucid Air began in late 2020 in the United States. In terms of marketing, we should therefore not expect to see the first specimens on the American roads before the beginning of 2021 and probably much further in Europe.

Summary: Lucid Air

  • Price: from € 70,000
  • Autonomy: more than 400 km autonomy (expected)
  • Luggage volume: 280 L at the front, plus 459 L at the rear
